Sheedi Jor Mela - Sahibzades   E-mail

Fatehgarh Sahib, Punjab, India - (UNI) The three-day annual ?Shaheedi Jor Mela,? held in memory of Guru Gobind Singh's two younger sons, Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh, who were buried alive in a brick wall here, began with the commencement of an Akhand Path of Guru Granth Sahib at Gurdwara Jyoti Swarup. Lakhs of devotes paid their obeisance at Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib and Jyoti Swarup on Saturday.

The first day of the Mela was observed purely in religious spirits. Dewans were organized in all Gurdwaras. Langar seva was established by the devotees from Gurdwara Beewangarh to Jyoti Swarup Sahib and Gurdwara Jyoti Swarup to Gurdwara Shaheedan. As always, nearby villagers organized langar for the devotees going to visit Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib for the Mela along all the roads leading to the gurdwara. The Nihangs began converging at Gurdwara Beevangarh Sahib near Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib. Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) arranged a Dewan where Ragis and Dhadi Jathas will perform continuous kirtan, give accounts of Sikh history and infuse 'bir rus.'

Braving the extreme cold, thousands of devotees thronged the Jor Mela right from early morning to attend the 301st Shaheedi Jor Mela. Even with the prevailing peaceful atmosphere, police were deployed around the Mela site.

The District Cultural Society organized a new program ?Sirhind Di Diwar,? a play by Harpal Singh, which was staged at Aam Khas Bagh Sirhind on December 24 and 25. Fatehgarh Sahib Deputy Commissioner Jaspreet Kaur released an information brochure regarding important information about Shaheedi Jor Mela.

Sunday was the day of conferences for almost all political parties. On the concluding day a nagar kirtan will be held from Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib to Gurdwara Jyoti Swarup, where the Sahibzadas were cremated. About twenty lakh devotees are expected to pay obeisance to the great martyrs of the Sikhs.

Fatehgarh Sahib DC Jaspreet Kaur banned and sale of and consumption of liquor near the Mela site. She said that the administration had made all the necessary arrangements to facilitate the visiting devotees and the staff had been prepared to perform duties properly.
